Electromyogram (EMG)

Information

for the examination

Basic elements:

  • Electromyography is a very important tool for the study and diagnosis of various diseases of the peripheral nervous and muscular system
  • It is a method of diagnosing nervous and muscular disorders .
  • It is usually performed in combination with the electroneurogram

What are the symptoms?

With the EMG symptoms such as:

  • Acute the chronic pain (eg waist, neck, shoulder, torso)
  • Blood clots, heartburn (on hands, feet or face)
  • Gait instability
  • Clumsy movement of hands and feet
  • Weaknesses, paralysis (hand, foot, face and elsewhere)
  • Muscle atrophies

When does one need to seek the help of a specialist?

The neurologist depending on the clinical condition of the patient, will recommend the performance of the specific outpatient examination.

Through this diagnostic method can be determined if:

  • suffers one or many nerves
  • the damage relates to mobility / aesthetics, whether recent or older
  • its cause and severity damage and the chances of recovery

Examination

What is the patient's preparation before the examination?

No special preparation is required for the examination. But the patient can follow some general rules before the examination.

  • Make sure you wear comfortable clothes before leaving the house
  • Do not apply cream, lotion or other oils on the skin on the day of the examination

The patient informs the doctor if:

  • It has a pacemaker
  • If you suffer from a condition that affects blood clotting, you should inform your doctor
  • He has had Botox injections
  • Takes antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs
  • Takes drugs that affect mobility (eg muscle relaxants)

How is the test performed?

During the examination:

  • done recording of muscle activity and thus checked:
    • the nerve function
    • the muscle function

  • E a thin needle is inserted inside the muscle ( estimation of changes in electrical signals in a state of calm and contraction). The recording needle is connected via cable to the electromyograph
  • The examination lasts about half an hour or more depending on the number of nerve-muscles to be examined

Can there be complications from the test?

  • The electromyogram is generally a safe and uncomplicated test.
  • In a minority of patients There is a sensitivity to electrical stimulation or to the insertion of a needle into a muscle
